PHISH FINDS NEW FREEDOM
by Steve Morse (Boston Globe)
The Vermont-based jam band Phish always has operated with a lot of
freedom- and they got even more with a recent contract extension from
Elektra records.
"They're giving us more and more leeway to do what we want to do," said
Phish bassist Mike Gordon. "They always have, and now it's particularly
free for us."
While other bands might straitjacketed into their record deals, Phish's
new three album pact allows the band to put out a variety of "esoteric"
albums on it's own, through it's fan club newsletter, which has 150,000
subscribers.
"We've got a lot of ideas for different kinds of albums," said Gordon.
"We'd like to put out an instrumental album, an acoustic album, a house
music album, whatever we can dream up."
We have all kinds of ideas floating around. And we're thinking of
different kinds of live albums," Gordon said. "The only thing is,
Elektra always gets first choice if they want to put it out. If they
don't want it, then we can put it out through the newsletter."
